How to keep your closets FRESH

Is it possible to Maintain fresh-smelling closets without relying on cedar lining?

You will be happy to know a few strategies that are both easy to implement and are environmentally friendly. Here are some practical solutions to keep your closets smelling their best:

1. Natural Air Fresheners

Essential Oils are at the top of the list. Place a few drops of your favorite essential oils on cotton balls or small fabric sachets and distribute them throughout the closet. Lavender, lemon, orange, and peppermint are very popular for their pleasant scents and may have moth-repelling effects.

2. Baking Soda. Baking soda is known for absorbing odors. Place an open box of baking soda in your closet to neutralize unpleasant smells. This cost effective solution can be replaced once every month for top results.

3. Maintain Proper Ventilation

Air Circulation: Ensure that there's adequate air circulation in your closets. Leave the doors open periodically to let fresh air in, if you have a window in there; you are super lucky. Ventilation is important during humid weather.

DRY clothes: Some clothes are not fully dry before putting them away and overpacking your closet can trap moisture and odors. Keep some space between items to allow air to circulate freely. Use silica gel packs to absorb excess moisture in your closet.

4. Natural Moth Repellents (no moth balls here)

We are talking Herbal Sachets: Create sachets filled with dried herbs such as lavender, rosemary, mint, or cloves. These herbs not only smell great but also naturally repel moths.

Cedar Blocks:

We had to get it in there. While not a lining, cedar blocks or even balls can offer the benefits of cedar in a more flexible format. They can be placed in drawers, shelves, or hung on closet rods. Some of them come in sachets too.

5. Dehumidifiers:

In areas with high humidity, consider using a small electric dehumidifier near your closet or in adjoining rooms to help reduce moisture levels.

6. Regular Cleaning

Vacuum and Dust the shelves Regularly. Vacuum and remove dust from build up. Pay attention to corners and baseboards where dust and hair accumulate and wipe them down.

Implementing these strategies can help keep your closets smelling fresh and protect your clothing and other stored items from moisture and pests. It's beneficial to use a combination of these tidy solutions for the best results.
